Improving Environments of Ma-Jang Meat Market,
Service Design
Ma-Jang Meat Market has been in operation in Seoul since 1961 and is the largest meat market in Korea. It offers a wide variety of meat, including beef, pork, lamb, and meat byproducts. A service design project was launched to improve the environment of the market. Despite its growing business, the market had not changed its structure for decades, and it faced issues with unpleasant smells and unappealing visuals associated with the display of meat and byproducts.
The goal of the project was to eliminate these problems by conducting extensive research, including in-depth interviews, shadowing, surveys, and prototyping over a two year period. The outcome of the project was a new basket system that effectively blocked unpleasant odors and visuals, which was applied to smaller meat markets near Seoul the following year.
Role
As a service design specialist, I participated in a project for approximately two years, leading a team of diverse members and subject matter experts across various fields. The project was well-received and its outcomes were recognized to the extent that they were later applied to address challenges in other meat market contexts.
